As Halloween season is approaching, many families will be carving jack-o’-lanterns to display on their front porches while trick-or-treaters come by for candy. However, without the proper precautions, these families could also experience unwanted pests. Here are some Halloween tips to prevent bugs from ruining your night.
Carve and Dispose of Pumpkins Early
While it may be tempting to carve your pumpkins weeks before Halloween, make sure to leave them solid and uncarved until a few days before Halloween. After carving the pumpkins, bugs and other pests will begin to live inside of them and slowly eat the pumpkins. Additionally, make sure to dispose of the pumpkins shortly after Halloween before it begins to rot and harbor more pests like the pumpkins shown above.
Don’t Create Insect Breeding Grounds
Piles of leaves, fire wood, and other debris are breeding grounds for insects. Make sure to keep these breeding grounds away from your house to prevent bugs from getting too close and multiplying on your property.
Don’t Leave Food Out
Do not leave food outside at night. Whether you are having a party or providing food to trick-or-treaters, never have opened food sitting outside – only pre-wrapped food. Keep all open food inside your house to ensure that you will not be attracting any unwanted bugs.

I love Halloween, but I don’t like it when my pumpkins attract bugs on my property. These seem like helpful tips to keep my pumpkins pest free this year. I should take your advice to avoid carving my pumpkin until right before Halloween. Every year I like to carve pumpkins and leave them out on my porch a couple of weeks before Halloween night. That would explain why I always have a bunch of bugs eating away at my pumpkin by then. I’ll be sure to avoid leaving out carved pumpkins, along with any other treats outside. Thanks for the tips!
