Tropical Storms Leave Behind an Unwelcome Gift

Notice more ant beds after the rain?

Finally, the pouring rain has stopped and local residents of the Florida Panhandle survey the damage from tropical storm Cindy.  Even if your home and property remain unscathed from this, weary pests look to your home for a refuge. Are you prepared for the after effects of the storm?

“Because of the rain from this tropical storm, a lot of outside bugs will attempt entry inside. You have an ideal environment there, it’s dry, it’s an even temperature, & there’s typically easy food,” says Eric Spears of Spears Pest Control. If you have more fire ants in your yard, along your baseboards, or those pesky roaches are found inside your home you can blame it all on our recent rain fall. Roaches are looking for high dry ground and ants simply float out of their homes and get relocated.

“Give a quick call to your pest control provider once the multi day storm passes, we will spray the base of the house, around the doors, & the windows. Brick homes typically get their weep holes sprayed too,”  Spears said.

As for fire ants, the rain forces them to build mounds above ground to keep their home dry. You can imagine when the ground is saturated with water how ants must build up to keep their ecosystem functioning.  Ever notice when the sun pops out after many days of rain that your yard will be covered with more ant mounds than normal?  It’s also a great time to exterminate them since they are more exposed!!
