5 Dangerous Beach Pests to Watch Out For

May 26, 2018 Leave a Comment

Summer is here and that means plenty of trips to the beach for days of fun in the Florida sun. But don’t let your guard down! There are some dangerous beach pests that will spoil your day if you or a loved one comes into contact with them.

5 Dangerous Beach Pests to Watch Out For

  1. Microorganisms

You can’t see them, but they can see you. These pests can come from swallowing seawater, from the sand, or from the food you bring if you don’t take steps to keep it cool. You might come down with stomach trouble on the light end of things to an infection on the more serious end of the spectrum. These beach bacteria, viruses, and parasites thrive in this environment so watch out!

  1. Jellyfish

Out in the water, jellyfish can lurk. Always swim near lifeguards and watch for posted signs of jellyfish in the area. When you walk along the shore, if you’re not careful, you can step on one there too. There are thousands of different kinds of jellyfish and while a sting from any of them hurt, some can be deadly.

  1. Sea lice

While incredibly annoying, sea lice aren’t very harmful. It leaves you with an irritating rash. Fun fact: sea lice are not insects. They are baby thimble jellyfish and can be found in warm ocean currents. To lessen the effects of coming into contact with these, shower off as soon as possible after a dip in the water.

  1. Sand flies

These annoying beach pests live in sandy areas. Their bites are like those of mosquitoes, feeding off your blood. And they can spread diseases and parasites. Avoid them by wearing insect repellent.

  1. Sand fleas

Chigoe fleas, fortunately, are not often found in the US, but with climate changes, things like these can be found. Your best bet is to wear shoes and keep an eye out on your feet for tiny black spots.

Once you’re back at home, you’ll feel safe and sound, and hopefully refreshed after a day at the beach. If you find pests in your home though, there’s only one name to remember: Spears Pest Control.
