Lovebug season is here again in Florida. Whether you think they’re cute or not, they can be a terrible nuisance out in your yard when you just want to enjoy a barbecue without flailing your arms incessantly. They’re even more annoying though when they splatter all over your car as you drive.
Sure, you can take steps to minimize your contact with these harmless insects. For one, avoiding the outdoors would be best, but that’s not always possible. To lessen their impact to your vehicle, you can try to avoid driving when they’re most active, but for most people, that’s not very practical either. The result is that you’ll drive around and get lovebugs splattered onto your car. It’s not attractive, nor is it good for your car’s paint job. You could try to slow down when you drive, but this is Florida and we’ve seen how people drive here.
So how do you get lovebugs off your car? Here are 3 completely effective ways to make that happen.
1. Wax on
Prevent those little buggers from sticking to your car by getting it waxed the next time you take it in for a wash. It’s worth the splurge because it will save your paint job and will keep their corpses from bonding to your car. You can do the wax yourself to save money, or if your budget is tight, lightly coat your car with cooking spray to make them easier to remove. One piece of advice with that though: make sure your paint won’t be affected by the cooking spray or you’ll wish lovebugs were your only problem!
2. Use dryer sheets
Dryer sheets are incredibly effective for removing dead, splattered lovebugs from your vehicle. You’ll use wet dryer sheets first to scrub the lovebugs off your car. As you do, rinse often, using more wet dryer sheets as you go. Keep scrubbing and they’ll come off. This works much more quickly than the traditional method of just using a car sponge and soap to get them off your car.
3. Use a bug screen
A simple solution that requires no scrubbing at all is to invest in a bug screen. This nominal investment is a smart one in Florida, one that will keep those pesky lovebugs off your front grill. The bug screen is much easier to clean than the residue left behind from dead lovebugs. If you use this method and wax your car, you’ll find your car still looks fresh and road-ready no matter how many swarms of lovebugs you happen to drive through.
